What is it about all the rust...

So just as a matter of discussion, why has rusted metal, perforated, corrugated, spindled or mutilated become so fashionable? Is it now old hat?

Personally, I'm a big fan of the rusted Core Ten steel/ exposed CMU / gabion wall look. I find the raw, unfinished nature of the materials appealing. But there IS starting to be an awful lot of it about. I've been wondering lately if twenty years from now we'll look on those materials with the same disdain we have for avocado colored kitchen appliances.

Still, natural materials seem never to go out of style. Time will tell.
